Connecting mushroom research and technologies with farmers, growers, entrepreneurs, extension personnel and other stakeholders.
ICAR–Directorate of Mushroom Research, Solan has a dedicated extension wing housed in the Transfer of Technology (TTC) Building. Its major activities include training programmes, the National Mushroom Mela, participation in exhibitions and Kisan Melas, on-farm trials, and responding to queries on mushroom cultivation and management.
Training programmes
Training programmes
The Directorate conducts sponsored and in-house training programmes on mushroom cultivation, both on campus and off campus. These programmes are designed for farmers, unemployed youth, entrepreneurs, Subject Matter Specialists (SMS) and other extension functionaries.
National Mushroom Mela
The Mushroom Mela began in 1997 as an experimental activity and has grown into a regular national-level extension event. It brings together farmers, mushroom growers, industry representatives, extension workers and other stakeholders to exchange knowledge and learn about mushroom technologies.
The mela includes displays and demonstrations, information from agricultural and allied organisations, and opportunities to interact with scientists and experts.
Outreach and technology transfer
Exhibitions, trade fairs and Kisan Melas
ICAR-DMR participates in national, state and regional exhibitions, trade fairs and Kisan Melas to raise awareness about mushroom cultivation and encourage rural and urban communities to consider mushroom growing as an enterprise. These events showcase technologies, share practical information and engage with growers and prospective entrepreneurs.
On-farm trials and technology demonstrations
On-farm trials and demonstrations help assess and communicate mushroom production technologies under practical growing conditions. They support technology validation, farmer learning and the dissemination of improved cultivation practices.
Advisory and query response
The extension wing responds to queries on mushroom cultivation, including crop management, production practices and common cultivation problems. Growers and other stakeholders can consult the Institute’s service and contact pages for subject-specific guidance.
Outreach and stakeholder engagement
Extension activities facilitate interaction among scientists, farmers, mushroom growers, entrepreneurs, development departments and other organisations. These interactions help communicate research findings and identify practical needs from the field.
